The following table lists the most current packages for the Office suite and for the individual applications. The Office suite includes all the individual applications, such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. All packages are 64-bit only. The build date is listed in parentheses, in a YYMMDD format, after the version number. The install package is used if you don't have the application already installed, while the update package is used to update an existing installation.
Update Microsoft Office For Mac If Already Have
If your current version is a one-time purchase, non-subscription version of Office like Office Home & Business, see below. If you have already have a Microsoft 365 subscription, select the Microsoft 365 tab below.
After the installation completes, your new version of Office should update automatically, or you might get a notification an update is ready to apply. (You also have the option to manually check for and apply updates.)
If your Microsoft 365 for business subscription is associated with your work or school email account (these versions of Office are usually licensed to you through your work or school), you have the latest version of Office as long as you keep it up-to-date. Depending on your operating system, check for Office updates for PC or Office updates for Mac.
If you are reinstalling Microsoft 365, you have already redeemed a product key, or you are installing Microsoft 365 at work or school and know you have a license, then go to the section sign in to download and install Office.
Go to office.com/setup and sign in with an existing or new Microsoft account and then enter your product key to redeem it*. Redeeming your key is what adds your Microsoft account to Microsoft 365 and you only have to do this once. If you're renewing a Microsoft 365 subscription with a new product key, use the same Microsoft account you previously associated with your expired version subscription.
The 64-bit version is installed by default unless Microsoft 365 detects you already have a 32-bit version of Microsoft 365 (or a stand-alone Microsoft 365 app such as Project or Visio) installed. In this case, the 32-bit version of Microsoft 365 will be installed instead.
To change from a 32-bit version to a 64-bit version or vice versa, you need to uninstall Microsoft 365 first (including any stand-alone Microsoft 365 apps you have such as Project of Visio). Once the uninstall is complete, sign in again to www.office.com and select Other install options, choose the language and version you want (64 or 32-bit), and then select Install. (See Install Visio or Install Project if you need to reinstall those stand-alone apps.)
For an Office for home product, go to office.com/setup and create a new Microsoft account or sign in with an existing one, then follow the remaining steps on that page such as entering your product key (if you have one). Your account is successfully associated with Microsoft 365 when you see the page, My Office Account followed by your Microsoft account email address, and a button to install Microsoft 365. Select the PC or Mac tabs above to help you with the rest of the install process.
To complete any of the steps below, you'll need the email address and password associated with your active and licensed Microsoft 365 subscription or your one-time purchase of Microsoft 365 for Mac. This may be your Microsoft Account or the account you received from your organization. You will also have already downloaded and installed the Office suite.
If you're trying to activate Microsoft 365 for Mac and have received error code 0xD000001c, this is because your Mac's name contains invalid characters when being sent to our server. To fix this issue, update your Mac's name to remove the invalid characters:
Whether Teams gets added to an existing installation of Microsoft 365 Apps is determined by what version is installed, what version you're updating to, and some other factors. Version 1906 that was released in Current Channel in July is the first version that started including Teams as part of the update process. But not all devices updating to Version 1906 or later have received Teams as part of the update process because the rollout has been a gradual process over several months. So if you've updated a device to the latest version of Microsoft 365 Apps, but Teams hasn't been installed, that is probably expected and not necessarily an error. It's likely a future update will install Teams. If you want Teams on that device now, you can install it manually from
If you're updating your existing installation of Microsoft 365 Apps to Version 1908 (Build 11929.20300) or later, Teams will be added. To complete the installation of Teams after the update, either restart the device or have the user log off and log back on.
If you have Microsoft 365 Apps for business or can't use Group Policy for some other reason, you can add the preventteamsinstall value to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\common\officeupdate key in the registry. The type for preventteamsinstall is REG_DWORD and the value should be set to 1 if you don't want Teams installed.
Microsoft products come with a product and activation key. If you already have one then before installing Office, sign in with your existing account, and enter your product key. You can always make a new account. Here are the steps to install MS Office on your Mac:
Despite the effort, Apple's iWork has not come close to undermine Microsoft Office. MS Office is still the most preferred software in the world. Microsoft Office for Mac offers great features that can enhance the overall experience of the user. It provides added functionality and improvements for the users to perform their tasks at hand with ease. Sometimes during an update, a minor internet or storage problem can halt the installation process entirely. This might cause the MS Office to not function properly. To fix the problem you might have to Uninstall and Reinstall the program. Now you know exactly what to do whenever such a problem arises.
The second advisory, 971888, is providing a non-security update for DNS devolution. While this is a non-security update, it changes the security configuration of systems it is applied to and that is why we are releasing it with an advisory. This advisory is also related to the WPAD issue for which we originally released Security Advisory 945731 and subsequently Security Bulletin MS09-008. With the release of this new advisory, we are closing out Security Advisory 945731. Security Advisory 971888 and the associated KB article go in to detail on DNS devolution and how the update changes the configuration. If you have any follow up questions, our live webcast tomorrow would be a great place to ask them.
